Tips for Removing Stains From Your Carpet

Accidents happen, and sometimes those accidents happen to our carpets, whether it’s wine stains, mud, or pet urine stains. Stains are inevitable, but they don’t have to be permanent. When they happen, it’s natural to panic and frantically Google ways to clean your fluffy cream carpet. While some DIY solutions can help with minor spills, tougher stains often need a more careful approach from a professional carpet cleaning company like us.

Believe it or not, the worst thing you can do is start applying random home remedies to your carpet. They don’t always work and can sometimes make professional removal more difficult. For example, one of our clients in Sutton Coldfield had to call us for professional cleaning after attempting to remove pet urine stains themselves—making the stains harder to treat.

Here are our expert tips for tackling carpet stains effectively:

Act Quickly

The key to successful stain removal is speed. The sooner you address a stain, the better your chances of removing it completely. Start by blotting the stain with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the liquid as possible.

Avoid Rubbing

Rubbing can push the stain deeper into the carpet fibers and spread it further. For instance, if your pet has an accident in the same spot repeatedly, scrubbing might feel like a deep clean, but it’s likely making the problem worse. Always blot gently instead.

Let Mud Dry

When it comes to mud stains, your first instinct might be to scrub the area immediately. Don’t! The best approach is to let the mud dry completely and then vacuum up as much as possible. Any residue left behind can typically be cleaned with a solution of mild dish soap and warm water.

Why Professional Cleaning Is the Best Option for Tougher Stains

While these DIY tips can handle smaller, less stubborn stains, some stains require professional expertise to fully remove. Tough stains, such as those caused by pet urine, wine, or deeply embedded dirt, can leave lasting damage if not treated properly. As professional carpet cleaners we have the tools, techniques, and experience to tackle even the most challenging stains without harming your carpet.

Attempting to treat tough stains yourself can sometimes make them worse or permanently set the stain. At Qualitas, we use specialised equipment and safe cleaning solutions to lift stains effectively, restoring your carpet’s appearance and extending its lifespan. For peace of mind and better results, professional carpet cleaning is always a worthwhile investment.

How to take care of your carpet between carpet cleans

The last thing you want to do after you’ve had your carpet cleaned is to make it dirty moments later. Here is our guide to keeping your carpet clean between your Qualitas visits, ensuring your carpet stays fresh for as long as possible.

These are our top tips on how to keep your carpet clean for as long as possible after we’ve professionally cleaned it.

Avoiding walking on the carpet straight away.

It’s tempting to start enjoying your new looking carpet as soon as we’ve left but we recommend leaving it to dry thoroughly before you start walking over it. One of the main reasons we recommend this is because oils from bare feet can affect the carpet.

Don’t move your furniture back into place while the carpet is drying.

On occasions we have to move furniture out of the way to ensure all your carpet is cleaned and once you have that sparkling new carpet you want to move everything back in. We recommend you don’t, not until your carpet is dried entirely. The reason for this is because damp patches can cause marks, stains and dirty areas that will dry into your carpet, meaning it will need cleaning again.

Use a carpet protectant

We recommend using a carpet protectant between cleans to help prevent any dirt or stains penetrating the carpet and causing tougher stains to remove, especially if your carpet is in a high traffic area. Carpet protectant however does wear off over time.

Have a good care routine for your carpet.

The best way to care for your appointment is to take care of it between your Qualitas carpet cleaning visits. The best way to do this is simply to keep on top of vacuuming and if possible remove your outdoor footwear before coming inside.

Schedule your next appointment with us.

Your carpets should be deep and professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. However you may need our stain and odour removal service during that time if you have children, pets or spill any beverages.
